A hybrid mattress is one that is made with a combination of different materials and comfort layers, most often some kind of latex or foam for conformity as well as a spring system for support.
At Dreamwool, every luxury pocketspring mattress we make would be considered a hybrid, as they all contain European-made pocketsprings, all-natural latex, and generous layers of plush Merino wool.
Let’s look at how these ingredients work together to create a sleep experience that is second to none.
Dreamwool Hybrid Mattresses
Dreamwool’s luxury hybrid mattresses are filled with kilos of soft, temperature-regulating Merino wool and 100% natural latex, working in unison with our signature pocketsprings for unmatched breathability, free from foams, gels and synthetic fillings.
Each model in our pocketspring range is available in three different levels of support (soft, medium and firm), using different edge-to-edge spring gauges to suit your unique preferences and body shape without ever compromising on our Merino and latex comfort layers.
What’s inside a pocketspring (hybrid) mattress?
A pocketspring mattress contains springs that are individually encased in their own fabric pockets and then joined together. They don’t move as a single unit in tandem the way that old-fashioned innerspring mattresses do; their individualised weight response enables sleepers to enjoy less motion transfer and better contouring. Unlike their coil spring counterparts, which are joined at the top and bottom, pocketsprings are joined at the hip, enabling each one to move independently.
Latex vs Hybrid
A latex mattress with no springs will generally feel a bit more conforming and dense, whereas a hybrid pocketspring mattress has a slightly firmer surface with greater resistance and slightly more movement.
The truth is that neither a latex or pocketspring mattress is more comfortable than the other. Generally, if you’ve already been sleeping on a hybrid mattress, we’ll recommend putting you on a similar pocketspring. Likewise, if you’re already familiar with latex, it may be a better choice to stick with what’s been working for you.
It’s all a matter of personal preference, but there are a couple of circumstances where a hybrid pocketspring mattress might be the right choice for your sleep needs and preferences.
Back Support
Finding the right back support is a hugely personal decision; that’s why we always recommend trying any mattress you’re considering and talking about your sleep needs in detail with your mattress retailer. But some sleepers do find that pocketspring mattresses can be better for back support because they can be customised with different wire gauges to tailor the perfect conformity for your needs, enabling you to reduce pressure points and achieve optimum support.
Partner Comfort
Because pocketsprings are individually encased and move independently from each other, they can be a great option for partners who want to reduce the potential for sleep disturbance. The ability to move in the night without transferring that movement to your partner can mean a better quality of rest for both of you.
