What Does an Orthopedic Bed Do?

Thursday, May 1st, 2025

What is an orthopedic bed?

Many mattress manufacturers include what they refer to as “orthopedic” beds in their product range, stating that these beds are created specifically for good spinal alignment. But the truth is that there really is no such thing.

What are often referred to as orthopedic beds are simply firmer mattresses that can be beneficial for people who, perhaps, have had an operation and require a specific level of support.

What are the benefits?

The claim is that the benefits of an orthopedic bed include better support, higher quality materials, pain and pressure relief, and temperature regulation. But, generally, orthopedic is just a description given to firmer mattresses within a manufacturer’s existing product range.

The good news is that every Dreamwool mattress offers all of these benefits and more. With each Dreamwool bed handmade to order and filled with only the finest natural materials, we are able to outperform so-called orthopedic mattresses with every bed we produce, and we can tailor each one to our customers’ unique needs and preferences.

What is the difference between a regular bed and an orthopedic bed?

The bottom line is that there isn’t one (or, at least, there shouldn’t be). When bed manufacturers are talking about orthopedic beds, typically what they mean is a firmer mattress with extra support and less comfort layers.

With Dreamwool beds, any mattress selection you make will offer the support, premium natural materials, customised firmness, sleep health benefits, temperature neutrality, spinal alignment, and pain relief promised by orthopedic bed manufacturers.

What are the disadvantages of an orthopedic mattress?

It’s important to use care when buying a mattress labelled as orthopedic, as these tend to be too firm for most people who think they need one. You don’t need a high level of firmness to achieve suitable stability; indeed, a mattress that is too firm can actually increase tossing and turning through the night and reduce your overall quality of sleep.

Who should use an orthopedic mattress?

An orthopedic mattress is only really necessary for someone who has been explicitly prescribed one by an orthopedic surgeon. Even then, it’s important to determine exactly what they mean by the term so you can use their tailored advice to choose a mattress that suits your individual, post-surgery needs.

Can a normal person use an orthopedic mattress?

Yes, anyone can use an orthopedic mattress, as this is simply just a firm mattress. The more important question is whether or not a firm mattress will meet your needs. It’s best to test a few mattresses in person to determine the right support and conformity for your body shape and sleep preferences.

What is the best sleeping position on an orthopedic mattress?

For most people with back or joint pain, sleeping on their back is the best position to maintain spinal alignment. If you prefer to sleep on your side, use a pillow between your knees to keep them separated and cushion sensitive joints.

Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Spine and Joints

Don’t get distracted by clever marketing – the truth is that orthopedic mattresses are typically a firmer mattress from within a manufacturer’s existing range. If you do have genuine orthopedic concerns, it’s best to discuss these with your doctor and get specific recommendations for a mattress that will meet your joint and spinal health needs.

If you’re unsure, the expert team at Dreamwool can talk to you about your orthopedic needs and make recommendations around the right materials and firmness to support you.

How Can I Make My Mattress More Comfortable?

Thursday, March 27th, 2025

If your mattress is showing signs of age and wear, or you find yourself stuck with a mattress that doesn’t feel right for your body type and sleep preferences, you might be wondering what you can do to make it more comfortable. While there are some short-term solutions available such as mattress toppers and pads, there really is no substitute for a high-quality, fit-for-purpose mattress.

The better question to ask, perhaps, is: Why would you try to make an uncomfortable mattress more comfortable? That’s like wearing an extra pair of socks because your shoes are the wrong size!

What to Do When You Get a New Mattress

To ensure that your new mattress is as comfortable as possible, it’s important to test it in-store and find out exactly what’s inside. Look for a good volume of high-quality natural materials that will support great sleep now and in the future.

If you’re torn between two mattresses, typically the softer option is better. If it feels firm after a few minutes on the shop floor, it will feel much firmer after eight hours of rest. And if the mattress you’re replacing is old and uncomfortable, please dispose of it, rather than recycling it back into New Zealand’s bed stock and making someone else lose sleep!

Does Folding a Mattress Damage it?

It is possible to safely fold your mattress while transporting it, though if you are storing it for an extended period, this should always be done with the mattress laid flat. If you do need to fold your mattress when getting it home from the shop or moving it to a new bedroom, the important thing to remember is that it should only ever be folded from head to toe. If you fold a pocketspring mattress from side to side, you could split the pockets.

So What CAN You Do if Your Mattress is Underperforming?

The experts at Dreamwool Beds would always recommend replacing your mattress if it is uncomfortable, ridging or bowing in the middle, or displaying a lot of body impression. But if you’re not quite ready to invest in your next mattress, there are some things you can do to help maintain your comfort.

Rotate Regularly

You should rotate your mattress regularly with each season. This ensures that you are sleeping on it evenly and distributing your weight across the whole surface.

Mattress Protectors and Pads

Mattress protectors and pads can provide a thin layer of added protection for normal sleep activities such as perspiration. Just make sure your protector is breathable in order to maintain the full comfort of your mattress.

Mattress Toppers

Mattress toppers are thicker protectors that can change the overall comfort and feel of your mattress. They can also make your mattress easier to care for due to their ability to be removed, aired and cleaned.

Most Dreamwool mattresses already have an integrated woollen overlay mattress topper which adds additional comfort layers and enables easier maintenance. Other mattress toppers on the market are typically designed to be a cheaper alternative to mattress replacement, with the aim being to extend the lifespan of your bed. This may work for a while, but it is ultimately a Band-Aid solution.

Prioritise Lifespan and Quality

The best way to have a comfortable mattress for as long as possible is to buy one with longevity in mind. High manufacturing quality and premium materials matter. Fewer or lower-quality fillings will result in a poorer quality of sleep; this only worsens as the layers wear over time.

By selecting a premium Dreamwool mattress, you can ensure optimum comfort and support for many years to come and experience the best sleep of a lifetime.

Why Merino Wool is the Best Material for Mattresses

Monday, March 3rd, 2025

Merino wool is an excellent material choice for both mattresses and clothing due to its breathability and exceptional temperature regulation. This lightweight, natural fibre is renowned for its unparalleled softness, antimicrobial properties, odour resistance, high fibre density, and moisture-wicking ability.

Where Merino Comes From (and Why That Matters)

Merino sheep thrive in New Zealand’s high country due to their natural ability to withstand a huge range of temperatures and climate conditions. This means that their wool is uniquely suited for clothing and bedding due to its superior temperature regulation and moisture control, keeping you comfortable all night and in any season.

Merino Wool Mattress Benefits

Here at Dreamwool Beds, we know that Merino wool is the best natural mattress material because it far outperforms synthetic (and even some natural) alternatives. Here are some of the key benefits you can expect from your Merino wool mattress:

Comfort

Merino wool excels in terms of breathability, making it the ideal choice for a cool, fresh and dry sleeping experience. Its fibres grow longer, with greater density than traditional wool; this translates into a mattress with exceptional softness and comfort.

Longevity

The dense fibres of Merino wool don’t stick to each other and felt down, which means that it doesn’t compact as much or as quickly as other types of wool. As a result, Merino wool can provide greater longevity, with a longer period of optimal comfort.

Sustainability

Dreamwool’s Merino wool is responsibly sourced directly from select high-country farms in New Zealand’s South Island. The sheep are bred on land that is not suitable for intensive agriculture, and they can be sheared for many seasons, making their wool a renewable and sustainable resource. The end product is biodegradable at the end of its life, unlike synthetic fibres found in many other mattress materials.

Temperature-Regulating Bedding

When considering what materials to choose for your bed and bedding, natural is always best, especially when it comes to keeping your sleep environment temperature-neutral. We believe that Merino wool and charcoal-infused latex sourced from rubber trees make the best material combination for your bed as, together, they yield a high-performance mattress with greater breathability, cleanliness, comfort and hygiene. The result? A luxurious night’s sleep with less partner disturbance, fewer night sweats, and superior comfort at all times of year.

For your bedding, you want natural products both underneath and on top of you. Look for sheets made from cotton or TENCEL™ – a cooling fibre made from wood pulp – as nothing else really compares when it comes to breathability.

Wool Vs Cotton Mattress Toppers

Both cotton and wool mattress toppers are natural and cooling, but wool has a superior ability to absorb and desorb moisture. Wool is also longer-lasting and more resilient than cotton.

Sustainable Sleep Materials

Sustainable materials such as Merino wool, TENCEL™, and natural latex are better for the environment and better for you. By selecting a mattress and bedding made from luxurious all-natural materials, you are choosing optimal comfort; beyond that, you are choosing something that will last you many years.

Breathable Mattress for All Seasons

Temperature neutrality is the key to sleeping soundly in all seasons; this is where Merino wool really thrives. The ability of Merino sheep to weather huge fluctuations in temperature and moisture translates into a mattress that will keep you sleeping soundly all year round.

We love our New Zealand Merino farmers, and we know that their exceptional product is second-to-none for comfort and luxury.

Do Cooling Mattresses Work?

Monday, March 3rd, 2025

As hot sleepers seek new ways to increase their comfort and quality of rest, some bed manufacturers are responding with a range of materials and technologies designed to lower the temperature of your sleeping environment. But are these so-called cooling mattresses all they’re cracked up to be?

The expert team at Dreamwool Beds is here to tell you all about how to stay cool and well-rested, no matter the climate or season.

What is a cooling mattress?

Some modern mattresses are manufactured with fans inside or underneath them, or with a grid-like top layer of what’s known as a Phase Change Material. This material, often a gel, is added to the surface of the mattress to absorb excess heat and help maintain a stable mattress temperature.

Do cooling mattresses work?

In principle, yes, cooling mattresses can help regulate the temperature of your bed, but in most cases, the cooling mechanisms are simply responding to problems created by flaws in the original mattress design. When mattresses retain heat, this is typically because they have been made with substandard materials and synthetic foams that fail to breathe, trapping heat and promoting night sweats.

By adding fans or gels to these synthetic base materials, you’re masking the issue, rather than solving it. Unless air can move freely through the mattress – which is not possible in a closed-cell synthetic foam – you’ll never really be able to keep it cool. Simply put, cooling mattresses are more of a marketing angle than an actual improvement in comfort or functionality. And in the case of fan-powered cooling mechanisms, you are creating a noisy sleep environment which, for many sleepers, can actually worsen the quality of your rest.

Breathable Mattresses

The best cooling mattress for hot sleepers is one made from a combination of natural materials and generous, breathable comfort layers. Materials such as the all-natural latex and Merino wool used in Dreamwool’s second-to-none luxury mattresses are the product of thousands of years of evolution. They are naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-neutral, unlike synthetic foams that lock in heat and don’t allow air to pass through. Using natural materials to absorb and disperse heat and moisture is the only way to truly maintain thermophysiological comfort.

Discover the Difference

When shopping for a temperature-regulating mattress, the most important thing to determine is exactly what it’s made of – it could be ticking the box but not actually doing the job. Don’t rely on computer-generated drawings; ask to see samples to learn exactly what’s inside and how much. These samples should clearly show you what the mattress is made of and exactly how those materials are working together to give you the best night’s sleep.

Here are the main things you should be looking for as you decide what to buy:

Natural Materials

You want locally made and sustainable natural materials including all-natural latex (not synthetic) and responsibly sourced wool. Merino wool is the best of the best as it will get warm but never hot, buffering the ambient temperature of your sleeping space even on a scorching summer night.

Quantity of Materials

Coolness comes from breathability; a big component of this is the volume of materials in your mattress. You should be looking for at least 25mm of all-natural latex as well as generous comfort layers of a natural product like Merino wool.

Best Mattress for Night Sweats

Night sweats can be a hugely disruptive and unwelcome part of your sleep routine. We find that Dreamwool customers with night sweats benefit most from a mattress system with a layer of microcoils for added breathability. Microcoils support your mattress’ comfort layers by putting a buffer between them and allowing more air to pass through the bed.

Sleep Cooler Tonight

When figuring out how to sleep cooler at night, don’t be fooled by gimmicks and add-ons designed to distract you from poorer-quality materials and construction. The coolest, most comfortable night’s sleep you’ll ever have will come from handmade craftsmanship and the best quality and volume of all-natural materials. Are Latex Mattresses Good for Back Pain?

Sunday, January 19th, 2025

The impact of mattress choice on spinal health

Your choice of mattress can have a huge impact on your overall spinal health. A high-quality mattress will provide you with the spinal support and conformity you need as you sleep, leading to better alignment, back pain relief, and healthier joints. Conversely, a low-quality mattress with inferior or insufficient materials can lead to back pain, bad posture, and poor muscle and joint health.

Common sleep disruptions caused by back pain

Back pain from an inferior mattress can lead to excess tossing and turning, waking repeatedly through the night, and struggling to find a comfortable sleeping position. As importantly, this can lead to chronic joint and muscle pain throughout your day.

What is a latex mattress?

A natural latex mattress is made from the sap of the Hevea Brasiliensis rubber tree. Latex mattresses provide strong support, absorbing every contour of your body and adjusting with you as you move during the night.

Natural vs. synthetic latex: Key differences

All-natural latex made from the Hevea Brasiliensis rubber tree is known to be sustainable, breathable, durable and hypoallergenic. Dreamwool luxury latex mattresses feature all-natural latex infused with activated charcoal for added freshness and don’t use any synthetic ingredients such as glue, foam or polyester. The result is optimum comfort and support for up to 15 years. Synthetic latex is cheaper but not environmentally sustainable. It breathes poorly – meaning that it retains moisture and can be prone to mould – making it both less comfortable and not as durable as its natural counterpart.

How merino wool latex mattresses are constructed

Dreamwool can provide you with the best mattress for back pain relief, handmade with the highest quality and volume of all-natural materials. Activated-charcoal-infused, all-natural latex is topped with plush comfort layers of locally sourced Merino wool for maximum comfort, breathability and support. Our hands-on craftsmanship across all mattress types, as opposed to the mass production of many standard mattresses, enables constant improvements to design quality to maintain an optimum sleep experience.

Benefits of merino wool latex mattresses for back pain sufferers

Many sleepers would benefit from using natural latex mattresses for spinal support. Latex mattress benefits for back pain include superior comfort and conformity to your body profile, with Merino wool providing temperature consistency and natural warmth to prevent joint stiffness.

Superior support and spinal alignment

Both Merino wool and all-natural latex provide superior comfort and spinal alignment by holding your body in a supported position without being overly firm or soft. Dreamwool offers four different latex densities to customise your mattress to your unique sleep preferences and needs.

Pressure relief for joints and muscles

The best way to ensure pressure relief for your joints and muscles is to select a mattress that has the correct latex density and comfort layers for your specific needs.

Hypoallergenic properties and sleep health

All-natural latex is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic. It is resistant to dust mites, mildew and mould, making it an excellent option for people with allergies and ideal for overall sleep health.

Choosing the right latex mattress for your needs

The best way to select the right mattress for your needs is to test potential options by lying down on them in your preferred sleep position. You should feel the mattress conforming to your body profile with equal support on all of your joints. You should also ask about what’s inside – all-natural products breathe better and provide optimum support and comfort.

Firmness levels suitable for back pain relief

While some promote firm mattresses for lower back pain, this ultimately depends on your weight and body composition. If you can easily slip your hand under your midriff, you know it’s too firm. You also want your hip and shoulder to be able to deflect and move into the bed without too much resistance.

Importance of mattress thickness and density

Density is much more important than thickness when selecting a mattress – the thickness of a mattress on the shop floor can be misleading due to synthetic materials that will not stand the test of time. To make the best selection, find out what it offers in terms of comfort layers and test how your body fits into the mattress in your natural sleeping position.

Customization options for personalized comfort

Dreamwool beds are crafted with customisable firmness to support optimal spinal alignment and better posture during sleep. By using different pocket spring gauges and varying latex densities, Dreamwool creates a sleep experience tailored to your unique body and comfort needs. This personalized approach ensures that each area of your body receives the exact level of support it requires, promoting restorative sleep and reducing pressure points.

Optimal sleeping positions for spinal health

Experts are divided on the best sleeping position for spinal health, but the consensus seems to be that your stomach is the worst. Back and side sleeping positions can both be beneficial for spinal health, particularly with a pillow under the knees while sleeping on your back, or between your knees to stack your hips while sleeping on your side. Ultimately, what’s most important is that your mattress offers the right support for your needs.
