Dreamwool Director and Mattress Designer,

David Henderson

Crafting luxury beds since 1934

Dreamwool is an NZ-based bed company that has has been in the luxury bed business since 1934 and in the Henderson family for over 40 years.

In 1978, Dreamwool owner Edgar Henderson began his quest for the most luxurious sleep. An ex-farmer with a bad back, Edgar remembered the old-fashioned black wool singlets worn by his shearers; how they acted as natural insulators and adjusted to changes in temperature during the day to maximise comfort and create perfect balance – never too hot or too cold! From there, the first Woollen Overlay was created, and thousands have enjoyed Dreamwool’s quality, handcrafted Merino wool mattresses ever since.

The Science Behind Merino Wool Beds

Merino wool is a game-changer in sleep science. This natural fibre offers outstanding temperature regulation, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter, so you can experience uninterrupted, restful sleep. The humidity is quickly drawn away, and the bed remains dry and airy. With these features among hypoallergenic and antimicrobial advantages, this makes Merino wool a naturally healthy luxury option in mattresses, far superior to synthetic alternatives. Enjoy the science-backed benefits of a Merino wool mattress: where nature meets innovation for a better night’s sleep.

Merino Wool Mattress Benefits

Our Merino mattresses redefine sleep luxury. Merino wool adapts to your body’s temperature, providing a cozy sleep in winter and cool comfort in summer. Its soft, breathable structure is ideal for those who value a fresh, dry bed year-round. Naturally resistant to dust mites and bacteria, Merino wool offers a hypoallergenic sleep environment. Dreamwool’s Merino mattresses are crafted to deliver long-lasting comfort, helping you wake refreshed and rejuvenated every morning.

Two paths to a luxurious night’s sleep

Dreamwool crafts top of the line, luxury latex and pocketspring mattresses, which offer both maximum breathability and climate control, with no compromise on comfort. Here at Dreamwool, we strongly believe in the power of high quality, natural materials – that’s why we craft each luxury bed using a combination of natural, charcoal-infused latex and 100% Merino wool sourced sustainably from carefully selected South Island farms. When you choose Dreamwool, you choose temperature controlled, durable, breathable products that don’t compromise on comfort. Our team can advise you on the benefits of each type of mattress and talk you through which type of luxury bed is best for your needs. Both types of mattresses move with you while you sleep and adapt to the curves and contours of your body.

Latex vs. Pocketspring: Which mattress is right for you?

Choosing between latex and pocket spring mattresses comes down to your personal comfort preferences. Our latex mattresses offer a resilient, contouring feel that aligns perfectly with the body, while pocket springs provide exceptional support with individual coils that adapt to your movement. Both options feature Dreamwool’s signature Merino wool, so you’ll experience unparalleled comfort and climate control, no matter your choice. FAQs:

Is merino wool good for sleeping?

Merino wool actively supports better sleep, thanks to its natural thermoregulating, moisture-wicking, and hypoallergenic properties. This versatile fibre maintains optimal body temperature by keeping you warm in cooler conditions and cool when it’s warm, reducing night sweats and discomfort.

Studies confirm that merino wool sleepwear and bedding help you fall asleep faster and improve sleep quality by minimizing interruptions. With its softness and breathability, Merino wool delivers the ultimate comfort for deep, restful sleep year-round.

What type of bed is best?

Choosing the right bed starts with your sleep needs and comfort preferences. Latex beds deliver contouring support that relieves pressure and keeps your spine aligned. Pocket-spring beds adapt individually to your body, offering a responsive feel that reduces motion transfer—ideal for couples.

Adjustable beds let you elevate your head or legs, boosting comfort and circulation, perfect for reading or addressing specific sleep concerns. A flexible slat base bed gives your mattress stable support with better breathability for coolness, increasing its longevity and ensuring an even sleep surface. Each bed type brings unique benefits, so the best choice is what feels right for you.

How long do most mattresses last?

Most mattresses last between 7 to 10 years, but Dreamwool’s high-quality materials—like natural latex and Merino wool—can extend a mattress’s comfortable life well beyond this range. Dreamwool latex mattresses, known for their resilience, often last 10-12 years with proper care. Beyond that, you may have had the optimum comfort and support, and you may want to consider a replacement.

Regularly rotating the mattress, using a slat or adjustable base for support, and keeping the surface clean are effective ways to maximize its lifespan. Investing in a Dreamwool mattress means choosing durability alongside comfort, ensuring a long-lasting sleep solution.

What does an orthopedic bed do?

An orthopedic bed is designed to support spinal alignment and promote better posture during sleep. By using targeted support zones or firmer materials, these beds provide additional support for areas like the back and hips, making them worth considering for people with chronic pain.

Orthopedic mattresses often combine materials like high-density foam or pocket springs to provide a stable yet contouring surface, reducing aches and improving sleep quality. This specialized support can be beneficial for anyone seeking better alignment and a restful, pain-free sleep experience
